As part of our “Por un Cielo Azul" campaign, Volaris has launched a joint-project with Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, I.A.P. and Bosque Sustentable, A.C. to preserve our ecological region in Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve (SGBR), located in the heart of México, the state of Querétaro.

When purchasing a flight on volaris.mx, you will find an option in our booking process that allows you to purchase carbon credits to offset your carbon footprint and donate $20 MXN to Sierra Gorda Natural Reserve.

Your donations are transferred to Bosque Sustentable, A.C., which is responsible in providing compensation for rural landowners in the SGBR. In exchange, landowners are committed to prevent forest fires, abandon agriculture and cattle ranching, stop timber harvesting and hunting activities as well as flora extraction. These efforts will also be accompanied by other activities including education, training and production diversity that allows Sierra Gorda to be successful.

Our customers now have the opportunity to be a part of this joint effort to protect our environment in Mexico and contribute in the fight to stop global warming, one of our biggest problems affecting our world today.

The mayor benefits of reforestation are the capture of carbon dioxide as part of the natural plant life process in order to offset carbon emissions from our flights. At the same time, this reforestation brings significant benefits to the local wildlife as some important species will be benefited directly with the restoration of their habitat including the jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, porcupines, white tail deer as well as birds like Crax rubra and Red-crowned Amazon.

The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is part of UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, a protected ecological region in Mexico created as a refuge for rich diversity of threatened flora, fauna and animal life.

“This project is also important to the rural communities around the Sierra Gorda”, said Martha Isabel Ruiz Corzo, General Manager of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda. “Your help will provide a new source of funds to renovate and preserve. This is a new important step in our quest to offer alternatives to the inhabitants of the Reserve and strengthen the local economy in their role of conservation of Sierra Gorda”.

With this new project, Volaris becomes an important partner with Sierra Gorda and keeps working for a better planet for all of us.
